Google Ads for Service-Based Businesses.

Industry Guides

Home services, trades, and contractors advertise under conditions that don't apply to most businesses: the work is urgent, the jobs are worth a lot, and the competition for the same few searches is fierce.

That combination rewards a different approach than general advice suggests.

Urgency is your advantage

Nobody shops around for three weeks over a burst pipe. Emergency searches convert faster and more decisively than almost anything else in local advertising.

Being visible during those moments matters more than being visible on average. If you offer after-hours or weekend service, say so in the ad — it's often the entire reason one business gets called over another.

High job value changes the math

A click that costs $15 looks alarming until you set it against a job worth several hundred or several thousand dollars. In trades, a click price that would be absurd for a retailer can be entirely reasonable.

It cuts the other way too. Because jobs are valuable, competitors bid aggressively, and a budget that's too thin can end up buying a handful of clicks and no presence at all. Concentrating a small budget on your best services and your tightest area beats spreading it thin.

Your service area is not a circle

Most contractors serve an area shaped by roads, bridges, and how long a crew is willing to drive — not by distance from the shop.

Target the places you're genuinely willing to go. Nothing wastes money faster than quoting jobs you'll turn down, and nothing annoys a customer more than being told you don't come out there after they've explained the whole problem.

The negative keyword list earns its keep here

Trade searches attract a lot of people who will never hire anyone. Blocking these is usually the highest-value hour anyone spends in the account:

  • diy, how to, yourself, tutorial, youtube — people fixing it themselves.
  • jobs, hiring, salary, apprentice, careers — people looking for work, not workers.
  • free, cheap, used, rental — rarely the customers you want.
  • parts, manual, diagram, replacement part — people shopping for components.
  • Brand and manufacturer names you don't service.

Calls matter more than forms

Most service customers want to talk to a person. Make the phone number obvious and tappable on mobile, where nearly all of these searches happen.

Then make sure the call is answered. A missed call in this trade is a job that went to whoever picked up next, and it's the most expensive mistake in the whole chain because you already paid for it.

Seasonality is real, and plannable

Heating searches spike with the first cold week. Air conditioning spikes with the first hot one. Roofing follows storms.

Advertising hardest when demand is highest sounds obvious, but the businesses that do well tend to be visible just before the spike rather than a week into it, when everyone has already called someone.

In the trades the fundamentals are unglamorous: be there when it's urgent, exclude the searches that waste money, and answer the phone.
